What DJ Lighting should I use?
We would suggest that you have a minimum of a four light set-up. If you have only
got four lights, make sure they are good ones. Each set-up should be unique. Many
now say that front light panels are out of date (a thing from the 70’s), if that
is the case then why are manufacturers producing LED Light Panels? LED is the future,
Light weight and getting cheaper and more reliable all the time. As far as lighting
goes, anything goes, as long as the overall effect does its job. Just make sure that
it is not too much or too little for the venue. Maybe a little smoke or haze too
(See below).
What DJ Sound equipment should I use?
Nowadays anything goes. Vinyl, CD or MP3, as long as it sounds good. Powered or non-powered
speakers with an amplifier and a mixer, as long as it all sounds good. That is the
big thing! Sound: loud does not mean good. Get the right volume for the right occasion.
Expensive or named, does not necessarily mean good sound. You can mix and match manufacturers
too, the choice is yours.
What DJ effects should I use?
Bubbles, haze, smoke, snow or foam, take one at least. Even the smallest smoke or
haze machine can make your light effects look amazing: smoke can turn LED effects
into something like a laser show. Asthmatics do tend to complain about smoke machines,
well, they are water based nowadays and not oil like they were, so do not worry.
Only in extreme cases do these new machines affect anyone (unless they are over used).
Bubble, snow and foam you must watch the floor with these: residue can build up on
the floor and turn it into an ice rink (use little but often). It does not mater
what the time of year, a quick blast from a snow machine at the end of the night
stays in the mind of the customer long after the event.
When should I use the microphone?
That is a tricky one to answer. Some have a natural gift, a real people person just
knows what and when to say it. Some occasions need little microphone work, other
times it feels like you never put the damn thing down. A lot depends on the crowd,
some are harder work than others. If you are like DJ SHOUT, and you show people the
dance moves on the dance floor and even sing to some of the tracks, then you use
the microphone a lot. At fun days and events he never shuts up.
